As important as these land preservation efforts are, we also realize that a healthy community needs economic growth. By using our County’s Comprehensive Plan as a guide, we continue to work with municipalities to promote growth in the proper places, such as areas surrounding existing development.

Berks County Heritage Center

The Berks County Heritage Center is a historical interpretive complex commemorating important eras of our cultural history. The Heritage Center hosts the annual Heritage Festival in October and several other annual events, along with a seasonal Interpretive Program series featuring workshops and programs for all ages. The Heritage Center is open from May 1 through the last Sunday in October.The hours are Tuesday-Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and Sunday 12:00 to 5:00 p.m.; the center is also open summer holidays. Tours are available daily; the last tour leaves one hour before closing.

The Berks County Parks & Recreation Department comprises 11 different Park areas throughout Berks County.
The 360 acre – 4.5 mile long Tulpehocken Creek Valley Park System includes: Stonecliffe Recreation Area, Berks Leisure Area/Sheeler House; Gring’s Mill Recreation Area; Red Bridge Recreation Area; the Berks County Heritage Center and the Union Canal Towpath Bicycle & Walking Trail. The Parks System also has outlying Parks around the County. Kaercher Creek Park is in Hamburg; the Allegheny Aqueduct/Beidler House is in Gibraltar; and Antietam Lake Park in Lower Alsace Township.

Picnic facilities, tennis and volleyball courts, play areas, special events, educational programs, festivals and concerts are held throughout the year.

Berks County Youth Recreation Facility
